Whakanuia a Whaea Rahera Shortland – 90 Years of Service, Leadership & Aroha

On Saturday 20 June, Te Ataarangi whānau gathered to celebrate a remarkable milestone - the 90th birthday of our treasured Manutea, Whaea Rahera Shortland.

For many within Te Ataarangi, Whaea Rahera is far more than a respected leader. She is one of the pou who has helped carry the kaupapa through decades of change, ensuring that the vision of our founders continues to thrive for future generations.

For more than fifty years, Whaea Rahera has dedicated her life to the revitalisation of te reo Māori. As one of the early leaders of Te Ataarangi, she worked alongside many of those who shaped the movement in its formative years, helping to establish and strengthen a kaupapa that has transformed the lives of thousands of learners across Aotearoa and beyond.

Her belief that te reo Māori belongs in homes, communities and everyday life has remained unwavering throughout her life's work.

Her contribution extends well beyond the classroom. Throughout her career she has trained kaiako, mentored emerging leaders, supported Te Ataarangi communities throughout Australia, and even shared the Te Ataarangi methodology with Indigenous communities in Hawai'i who were undertaking their own language revitalisation journeys. Most recently, she led a 12-month Kura Kaiwhakaako within, helping prepare another generation of Te Ataarangi teachers to carry the kaupapa forward.

Today, Whaea Rahera continues to serve as one of Te Ataarangi's Manutea, the esteemed kuia who remain our living connection to the earliest days of the movement. As a Manutea, she offers wisdom, guidance and steadfast support across the many kaupapa of Te Ataarangi, ensuring that the values and intentions of our founding leaders continue to be upheld.

Her quiet strength, generosity and deep commitment have become an enduring source of inspiration for generations of kaiako and ākonga alike.

Her dedication has been recognised nationally on several occasions. In 2016 she was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to Māori, education and television, and earlier this year she was further honoured as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in recognition of her lifelong service to Māori language education.

While these honours acknowledge an extraordinary career, those within Te Ataarangi know that her greatest legacy lives in the countless people who now speak, teach and cherish te reo Māori because of her guidance and example.

As we celebrate Whaea Rahera's 90 years, we also celebrate a lifetime of service given with humility, determination and aroha. Her steadfast commitment to Te Ataarangi has helped ensure that our kaupapa continues to flourish, reminding us that language revitalisation is not the work of a moment, but of generations walking together.

E te Manutea, e te pou tokomanawa o Te Ataarangi, tēnei mātou e tuku atu nei i tō mātou aroha, te whakamihi me te ngākau whakaiti ki a koe.

Hari huringa tau 90, Whaea Rahera. 🎉🎂🥳

Mā te Atua koe e manaaki, e tiaki i ngā rā katoa e tū mai nei. 💚🌿
