For many of us, Matariki has become a time to gather with whānau, enjoy shared kai, and celebrate the beginning of the Māori New Year. While these traditions are important, Matariki also offers something more personal—it invites us to pause, reflect on where we have come from, acknowledge where we are today, and consider where we hope to go next.
At Te Ataarangi, this whakaaro resonates deeply with our kaupapa. Learning te reo Māori is not simply about memorising vocabulary or mastering grammar. It is a journey of reconnecting - with our whakapapa, our identity, our communities, and with ourselves.
Like the changing seasons, this journey is not always linear. There are moments of challenge, moments of growth, and moments of celebration.
Each of the nine whetū of Matariki carries its own significance and offers an opportunity for reflection.

Pōhutukawa reminds us to honour those who have passed before us. As we learn te reo Māori, we also acknowledge the generations who carried and protected our language through times when it was under threat. Their resilience allows us to stand where we are today.

Tupuānuku encourages us to recognise growth. Take a moment to reflect on your own reo journey. What have you learned this year? What conversations can you now have that once felt impossible? Every new kupu and every attempt to speak contributes to your progress.

Waitī represents fresh water and renewal. Sometimes our learning requires us to let go of the fear of making mistakes and allow ourselves to begin again. Every lesson is another opportunity to refresh our confidence.

Waipunarangi is connected to the rain. While rain can represent challenges, it also nourishes growth. Many learners experience moments of self-doubt or frustration, yet these very moments often become the greatest catalysts for confidence and resilience

Ururangi speaks to the winds of change. Learning a language transforms us. It changes how we see the world, how we connect with others, and how we understand ourselves. Embracing change is part of embracing the journey.

Hiwa-i-te-rangi is perhaps the whetū many know best as the star of aspirations and hopes for the future. What intention are you setting for your reo this coming year? Perhaps it is to hold your first conversation entirely in te reo Māori, to speak more confidently with your tamariki or mokopuna, or simply to keep showing up each week.
Finally, Matariki and Waitā together remind us that no journey is undertaken alone. Te Ataarangi has always been founded on the principles of ako, manaakitanga, and whanaungatanga. We learn with one another, support one another, and celebrate each other's successes because language flourishes in community.
As we enter this Māori New Year, we invite you to take a moment to reflect.

Which whetū speaks to you most right now?
Perhaps it is one that reminds you to honour the past. Perhaps it encourages you to recognise your own growth. Or perhaps it inspires you to dream boldly for the future.
Whatever your answer, remember that every kupu learned, every class attended, and every conversation attempted is another step in the revitalisation of te reo Māori.
As we look to the stars of Matariki, we carry the wisdom of those who came before us while moving forward with hope, purpose, and the shared commitment to ensure that our reo continues to thrive for generations to come.
Mānawatia a Matariki.💫⭐✨
